Race Against Breast Cancer

It's official. The registration forms are sent. The dues are paid. Everyone in my household (dogs not included) will be participating in the 13th Annual Race Against Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk here at home on Saturday, September 18th.

I hold this charity closer than most because I know the fear that goes with finding a lump in the breast. It's the not knowing whether it's malignant or not that is more stressful than anything at first. The surgery to remove the lump isn't all that bad and scarring is minimal (at least for me). Luckily, my lump was benign, but I feel for those women who hear the opposite. It can be a frightening experience, no matter what the outcome, but I'm sure the fear hightens if the news isn't so positive.

I've wanted to do this race for awhile now. Back before summer, I was walking/jogging along a near-2-mile trail in addition to working out. I got off schedule when summer hit, so I'm probably not in as good shape as I was a few months ago. I'm trying to get back on track. Hopefully by race day, I'll have at least a little of my stamina back. I'm proud that my daughter said she'd join in. I'm sure she and I will walk most of the way, but it'll be fun - a shared time with her I'm looking forward to.

As far as I know, races are happening all over the country this month, so if it interests you, do a web search and see what you come up with. Find one taking place near you and join the fun. Afterall, it is for a good cause.
